Identity Project
GuildHall

First year, first term. Regarding identity, it was where I got the awareness and a deeper understanding of how I work in terms of my approach, which is a natural flow style without much structure. I also became aware of what were the influences that made me who I am today, that is mainly my family, as I am the youngest, I absolved something from each one of them. For example, my sister acting and modeling. My brothers music and skateboard. My mum meditation, selfcare. My dad travel and animals. Then, the influences of the environment, Brazil, barbecue, party etc...
Coming to the end of the term, we were introduced to the directors Endy and Chetna, which I already knew them through Generation Arts. Working with them you really need to step up your discipline game witch I find helpful taking the group to a professional level. Not wasting time, but also and mainly to build a strong, trustful and resilient assemble. Some people might not like much and perhaps are not used to it, finding a bit uncomfortable.
Through my experience I see that I most learned and evolved when I was at the pick of my discipline. I still working and trying different habits to see what works better for me finding my balance. (Tim Ferriss plays a big part of me in that). I realized that doing physical exercises, gym or running, already triggers me to drink more water, eat healthier, sleep easier and better. It is also a time for my body and free mind, which is really important to keep me grounded. The love of family, friends that make you laugh and forget about time are also a must. I also do appreciate having my own time alone, which I been doing since young, as much as I love spending my time with people. For example, If the weather helps starting my day having eggs and toast followed by 10min meditation in the garden, I am already winning the day.
One of the main things I want to talk about from this performance besides discipline, is also the value of the development with my relationship with Tal.
Movement is one of her main strong art crafts, combined with an easy going and colourful personality we make a good match to work together. I remember around the first weeks of the first term, we had a free time after a class, and we wanted to jam together, make some noise. With a Cajon and a guitar, we were messing around and also exploring sounds using methods that we saw Detta and Tash doing, responding to each other sounds, reacting with the surroundings. I remember I was holding myself a little bit at the beginning, until Tal started to speak in Hebrew with me, and I started to reply in Portuguese, whilst playing.. funny enough we were talking about similar things..(hahaha).
Going with the flow that day we jammed couple of funny songs, and we tried to replicate them to record on my phone, wasn’t bad. But wasn’t the same as the original jamming. That day we got really inspired to create more things together.
On the process of the final term performance, the play was divided in parts of I, Me, Us, We. Endy and Chetna asked me to create a movement piece as the play was a bit heavy in poems and a contrasting movement piece would be helpful to make the play a bit lighter. I called Tal to create something together. We went to outside of the room by the stairs on the floor and started to bouncing ideas about “WE”.
I had this “couple idea”, trying some movements that I already knew from past workshop classes, sparkling more ideas in Tal’s mind. And it started to go to a kind of a “joke fight” with this touch of humans animal that don’t speak, until we get to the point of we were sitting for a date in front of each other, and becoming wild animals, demonstrating the idea of how me met each other, through the physical movements.
As we didn’t have always the same sequence of movement, we left it open, with just some parts pinpointed, such as, when I drop on the floor, etc. Each time we did it would be slightly different keeping it real in the moment, alive and surprising even by us.
When we were running through all the play, and got to this piece the group gave ideas like to have the light just on us, Abi G. started to improvise on the piano. It was beautiful.
In this video in particular I am don't like much my performance, because I have done it better. On this time wasn't as fluid as I wanted to be. Some people say it was one of their favorite parts in the play. I really enjoyed making it, physical theater is quite natural for me as my confidence with moving my body comes since young. When I started to study performing arts, not speaking much English, physical theater classes were where I could feel free to express myself.
If I am working with someone that I feel comfortable with to share my ideas, I believe great work is going to happen.
The value of relationship and discipline are the main things I take forwards from this performance. Working with someone that you already feel comfortable with, there's no need to worry about building a trust that is already there, it is easier for me to take a risk, trying something different. I would improve spending more time developing the character and more challenging movements.
