Collab

      with

            Fab

Half Moon Putney Pub - Fab's last BIMM Performance.

A couple of months before the show, Fab invited me to play a song on the guitar with him.

Britney Spears - Lucky (Thirdstory ft. Abbey Smith)

Which was a good challenge as I don't play this style of song, and mainly to play together with Fab for his last performance on his third year at BIMM.

The challenges began when I was trying to find the notes the way ThirdStory plays it. I couldn't find it anywhere. Usually people would ask in the comments of the video, but no one replied, no one knew it.

My only option was to listen to the intro, over and over again, and find note by note. It took a while as it isn't a simple playing style. I ended up creating some notes that I didn't had any clue what they were, but their made the same sound of the video.

On my guitar 121 with Sam Mumford, he helped me to clarify what was happening in the song, the structure and also he said the way I was playing wasn't wrong, but there were a easier way. I have this thing sometimes about over complicating things. Sometimes I try to say to myself, "keep it simple", but things like to flow on my hands, like creating this wix website.

At times, I didn't understand what the guy playing the guitar on the video was doing. Turns out that "he is playing some wrong notes sometimes" (Sam), But the way he carries on in the song, looks like is the way the song should be. Confidence. Sometimes people won't even realize you got something wrong if you don't express it.

Fab and me rehearsed a couple of times, at work, as we work together, and at my house.

It took a bit of practice until my right hand fingers get used to the patterns plunking the strings, the feeling of the song. and also the structure of the song. It helped me to record myself playing on my phone, and play again following the lyrics by my self, to have an idea of the structure.

Show time. I am not sure why, but I was quite tense. I wish I had enjoyed more whilst I was playing it, feeling more the song. I just didn't want to get anything wrong as we had made some adjusts on the night before, and we didn't had time to run through the song. Besides that, it went everything alright.

What is important from this project is the value of asking someone that has more experience about your doubts, like Sam did with me, when I didn't understand why the guy on the video would play certain notes that really didn't make sense. Also again like the others projects, the value of building a relationship. Fab has a beautiful voice, and I hope we can collaborate again soon.
